Reconnecting People With Place
The Withernsea Regeneration and Community Engagement Project has been created to encourage residents and visitors to explore the town in a meaningful way. It combines history, culture, walking routes, and digital interaction to create an experience that is educational, enjoyable, and rooted in local identity.
Families, individuals, and visitors are invited to slow down, look closer, and learn while they walk. Every scan, step, and stop helps tell the wider story of Withernsea and strengthens the connection between people and place.
Three Routes. One Shared Story
Participants begin their journey at St Nicholas Church, where they can register and choose from three self-guided walks. Each walk uses QR codes placed around the town, unlocking stories, images, and insights at key locations.
Bronze Walk
A shorter route designed for families and casual explorers.
Complete 25 QR locations.
Silver Walk
A medium-length walk offering deeper historical discovery.
Complete 50 QR locations.
Gold Walk
A longer, more immersive journey through the town’s history.
Complete 100 QR locations.
Each completed walk earns recognition through digital and physical rewards, encouraging people to return and continue their journey.
A Visual Journey From 1900 to 2000
At the heart of the project is an extensive collection of historic Withernsea postcards drawn from multiple collections. These images capture everyday life, landmarks, holidays, and moments in time spanning the twentieth century.
Each postcard acts as a window into the past, showing how Withernsea has changed while retaining its seaside character. Integrated into the walking routes and digital platform, these postcards transform history into something tangible, accessible, and deeply personal.
Supporting Local Life & Local Business
The project is designed to gently guide people through Withernsea’s streets, encouraging them to visit cafés, card shops, amusements, and independent businesses along the way.
By following the postcard trail and exploring historic locations, participants naturally engage with the town’s amenities. This increased footfall supports local traders, strengthens the local economy, and helps regenerate the town through everyday activity rather than disruption
Explore. Scan. Discover. Share.
1
Pick Up a Map and Start Walking
Download the trail map from the website or collect a printed copy from a local pickup point. Choose your route and start exploring Withernsea at your own pace.
2
Scan a QR Code With Your Phone
As you walk, look out for QR codes placed at key locations. Open the camera on your mobile phone and scan the code. No app download is required.
3
Discover the Story Behind the Postcards
Each QR code unlocks historic postcards, photographs, and stories connected to that location. You can read the history or listen to the audio and experience Withernsea’s past as you stand in the present.
4
Mark It Off and Keep Going
Once you’ve explored a location, mark the QR code as completed on your map or digital tracker. Every scan brings you closer to completing your walk and earning your Bronze, Silver, or Gold achievement.
This simple process turns an everyday walk into a shared journey through Withernsea’s history and community.
